Distorted Beast
The Distorted Beast is Randy’s take on a heavy distortion pedal. He wanted to design something that could replace almost any clean amp and make them sound as if you were running a Peavey 6505 instead.
With four gain stages, this pedal allows for heavy distortion even with the gain control turned down. A distorted signal is still guaranteed.
With heavy distortion, comes lots of noise. Randy knew this, so he did some research and testing. By designing a gate circuit in the chain, you can flip the gate on to cut out all the hissing and circuit buzz that would normally be heard.
Randy wanted to make sure that there was plenty of versatility in the circuit as well so that players had options and the ability to dial in a tone that would work with their rig. What works for one musician, might not work for the other. So, by providing Treble, Bass, and Presence, you can dial in a tone that will work with your rig.
Switch: The Switch will allow you to turn the gate on and off.
Gain: The gain will allow you to dial the distortion you desire.
Bass: Increase the low in with a nice bell curve at 150 Hz to get you a nice warm sound.
Treble: increase the brightness of you sound
Presence: This will roll of the high end and help trim out the super crispy highs that might not be wanted.
Secret Trim pot: If you open the back of the pedal, you will find a trim pot, this pot controls the threshold of the gate/expander. You can use a tweaker flat head to adjust how much of the signal gets clamped down by the gate.
